Spotted eagle rays have white spots on a dark, kite-shaped body and can span about 3 m (10 ft) including a long, whip-like tail that may bear venomous spines. Generally not aggressive, they "fly" with wing-like pectoral fins and can burst to ~22 mph. They eat mollusks and crustaceans, crushing shells with plate-like teeth and digging in sand with their snouts. Females are ovoviviparous, birthing 2–4 live pups. Often social—juveniles in small schools, sometimes large aggregations—some populations migrate seasonally. Predators include large sharks and orcas; speed and agility aid escape.
